‘Rock On’ rocks – Movie Review

Farhan Akhtar’s much awaited acting and singing debut ‘Rock On’ has hit the right spot scoring high at the Box Office. The film seems to be amazingly planned by Farhan Akhar as his own acting debut and he totally lives up to the character with effortless ease.

The film revolves around four main characters- Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar), Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal), KD (Purab Kohli) and Rob Nancy (Luke Kenny). The female leads in the flick include Shahana Goswami, who plays Arjun’s better-half, and Prachi Desai, who plays Farhan’s wife.

Though the characters are distinctively different from one another, it’s the common passion for music that brings them together, forming one of the country’s most successful bands.

Farhan’s performance is simply impeccable, both as an actor and a singer. Arjun Rampal is flawless in his portrayal. Farhan-Arjun combo rock together in a manner that you cannot afford to miss them. Purab Kohli, who has a natural flair for comedy excels and Luke Kenny is convincing in his role. Prachi lives up to her poised debut (guess she has finally realized that her real mettle lies here and not with Ekta Kapoor), and Shahana comes up with the most gripping act that manages to add some quality depth to the drama.

‘Rock On’ is a musical journey of four friends, the talented musicians who apparently come together to form their amateur rock band, ‘Magik’. Band members- Luke Kenny (Rob), Farhan Akhtar (Aditya), Purab Kohli (KD) and Arjun Rampal (Joe) are passionate to get that one big break which could change their lives for good.

Aditya Shroff comes from a privileged family and is forced to choose between his dreams and comfortable but spoilt rich life. He aspires to follow his dreams and in the process meets up with Joe, KD and Rob. The three have their own distinct talents that set them apart. Joe is a man of few words who lets his guitar do the talking; KD is a killer Drummer and Rob a quite problem solver of the band. Due to some ego clashes, the story almost sees a saddening end of ‘Magik’.

However, after a decade destiny brings them back together. And this is when the delicate darling Prachi proves her presence. She does her bit to get the foursome together to bear out their creative talent. Following some initial hesitation, the band members bond again and blend to brew good tunes. Of course, the climax of the film is set in a rock concert where the band delivers a maddeningly engrossing performance.

In spite of a whole lot of predictable moments, you seem to hold your breath for Arjun Rampal’s ‘predictably late’ entry in the climax concert. You aren’t surprised when one of the band members is diagnosed with cancer but you still feel for him. That’s how the perfection and sincerity of the performances touch you.

However, if it’s only the big star appeal that can convince you to burn that hole in your pocket, we suggest, do take the time out to watch this one as this youth story is truly rocking.
